CHIHUAHUA
See video by AKC

History:  Toy Group.  Was originally larger than is it now.  Its name comes from the Mexican city and state.  Probably has roots in South America and was a religious symbol to the ancient Toltec tribes.  The Chihuahua is also said to have been a favored sacred animal to the Aztecs who came to the same region later, and who consumed the Chihuahua as "holy" food and sacrificed it to the gods.

Description:  Known as the world's smallest dog breed.  Comes with two distinct coats, long coat and smooth coat (or short coat) and two body types, cobby and slender.  The cobby body type is stout, compact and is quite hardy.  The slender body type is delicate, dainty, and sleek.  Comes in any color or mixture of colors.  Good apartment dog, but needs exercise.  A tiny dog with tremendous spirit.

Temperament:  Not especially suitable for very small children.  Very lively and fairly independent, proud and strong-willed.  They accept no cheek or insult from larger dogs.  Needs firm training.  For a "happy" lap dog it is usually very bold and courageous, willing to announce the approach of strangers, yelling defiance and threatening mayhem as they race to defend home and family.

CHINESE CRESTED
See video by AKC

History:  Toy Group.  Said to have been owned by Chinese families since the Han Dynasty.

Varieties:  Crested is a very distinctive dog of which there are also two varieties --  hairless and powder puff.  The hairless is warm to the touch and should have no hair, or very little hair on its body, just a crest of hair on the head, plume of hair on the the tail and socks covering the feet.  The powder puff has a soft veil of long hair.  The hairy hairless is very much like the hairless but has hair going down their back and more hair on the face than the hairless.  The hairy hairless is typically clipped down to appear as a hairless.  Click here for an example of all three types.  There are also two body types racy and fine boned, the other heavier in bone and body.  (Note: Moisturizing cream us usually used on the hairless variety to keep the skin supple.)

POODLE (Toy)
See video by AKC

History:  Utility Group.  Despite being widely accepted as a French breed, the development of the Poodle began in Germany.  The larger Poodles were used to pull carts and so became larger and stronger.  While in France they were used as companion dogs and the breed became smaller.  Smaller Poodles were renowned as circus dogs--being able to learn tricks with ease.

Varieties:  Standard (over 15 inches at the shoulder, nearing 40+ lbs.), Miniature (11-15 inches, weighing about 26-30 lbs) and Toy (see size described below).  All sizes are well balanced, smoothly muscled, elegant looking with a proud carriage.  Long chiseled foreface with long and fine heads.

Color variations are White, Cream, Brown, Apricot, Black, Blue and Silver--preferably all one color.  The curly dense coat is non shedding.  Their coat requires effort to be a show dog, but they do not have to be clipped for a pet.  You can put as much time in their coat care as required to keep them free of mattes if you desire.

Temperament:  They are gay spirited and good tempered.  Elegant and dignified.

Size:  Height is under 11 inches at the shoulder.  Weight is 14-16.5  lbs.  PLEASE NOTE: This is the standard for the Toy classification. Our puppies are smaller than the Toy, if there were a classification they might be called Tiny Toy.

PUG
See video by AKC

History:  Toy Group.  Today's pug ancestors came from the Far East where they were miniaturized from mastiffs some 2,400 years ago.  In the 16th century, they found their way to Holland and later arrived in Britain.  They became prized companions and this dignified breed has been popular with both royalty and aristocracy.

Description:  Comes with well knit proportions and hardness of muscle.  Tail is high set and tightly curled over the hip. Square, and boxy body.  Large head, globular eyes, expressive face make for a thoroughly entertaining pet.

Temperament: This is an even-tempered breed, exhibiting stability, playfulness, great charm, dignity, and an outgoing, loving disposition.  Strong willed and not easy to train, however, it is worth the effort as a pug makes a rewarding companion and a good family dog.

Size:  Height 10-11 inches at the shoulder, and around 14-20 lbs.  Can gain weight if too sedentary.

Size             1 2 3 4        (small to LARGE)

SHIH TZU
See video by AKC

History:  Utility Group.  Roots lie in both Tibet and China, the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese both being involved in the breed's make-up.  When the Shih Tzu arrived in Britain in 1930, there was much heated debate and confusion between the Lhasa Apso and the Shih Tzu.

Description Sweet warm wide-eyed expression.  Sturdy, having a chrysanthemum-like face, because hair grows upward on the nose.  Coat is long and dense with good undercoat and requires care to keep it tangle free.  The nose is shorter in Shih Tzus than in the Lhasa Apso, and  although technically slightly taller than the Lhasa, the legs on the Shih Tzu are, in fact, shorter.  Should not be leggy or squatty.  Distinctly arrogant carriage with the tail curled up over the back.  Has an undershot bite, but teeth and tongue should not show when mouth is closed.

All colors are allowed and a white blaze on the forehead and white tip to the tail are highly desirable in parti-colors (which means two-colored).

Temperament:  Intelligent, active, alert breed.  Both friendly and independent, outgoing and trusting.  The sole purpose of this breed is that of a companion and house pet.

Size:  Height 9 to 10.5 inches at the shoulder.  Weight is 10-18 lbs.

Size             1 2 3 4        (small to LARGE)

YORKSHIRE TERRIER
See video by AKC

History:  Toy Group.  Probably the result of a breeding cross between the Maltese and the local English terriers.

Description:  The magnificent sight of a Yorkshire Terrier in full show coat is outstanding.  A tremendous amount of effort must be made to get a coat ready for exhibition, however, Yorkshire Terriers are very much wash and wear if you are not going to put them in the show ring.  A pet Yorkie rarely looks like a top show dog.

Dark sparkling eyes give a sharp, intelligent expression.  Short body.  Tail docked to medium length.  Color as an adult should be steel-blue and tan.

Temperament:  A hardy character, full of fun and very much a terrier at heart.  Spirited, yet with an even disposition, this is an alert breed, confident, vigorous and self-important.

Size:  No more than 7 lbs.  Height is usually around 9 inches.
